Did I ever tell you how much I love Hannah Hoch's work? Well I do.
She was an amazing artist that was funny, provocative and political. Hailing from the Dada period in the 1920s Hoch was a pioneering feminist of the time.

Above is a piece I made inspired by the brilliant Miss Hoch!

The year has almost come to an end & I'm posting just in time for it!

I've been absent for most of it. It's certainly been an interesting year with an abundance of retrospect, introspect and discovery. As all things come to an end, so does this chapter.

Oh yes, the things we do for beauty ;)

I've been enjoying and practicing a bit of embroidery and mixing it with some ink, pencil, acrylic on calico. Calico is great fun to work on with mixed media however it is a bit tricky and stubborn when it comes to regular drawing. Excuse the image; this sample is scanned so the quality is a bit off and I think the original looks much nicer. Perhaps I will try photographing next time so as to capture the texture of the piece.

Also, here my Hipster lemon; 'C' is for Cool.

I have most recently been suuuuuper busy organising this grand event, Banana A-Peel..This beast has most recently taken over my life but wow! Has it been worth it. Hell YES.

30 Artists! 4 Bands! 1 Night!

Banana A-Peel is Melbourne's diverse arts community coming together to raise money for the victims of the recent flood disasters. More than thirty Melbourne based artists and musicians have generously donated their

talents for this charity art exhibition, auction and live show.

The exhibition opens on the 24th of February and kicks off at 6pm in the upstairs gallery at Old Bar, Fitzroy. Bidding starts at $20. Host for the night will be local comedian Andrew McClelland.

Music commences at 8pm with Melbourne bands The Book Of Ships, The Yard Apes, Skyscraper Stan and

The Once Overs all donating their time for the cause.

Entry cost is $8 and all proceeds will go directly to the Salvation Army Flood Appeal,

The exhibition runs until the 10^thof March and a preview will be available on Facebook from the 15th of Feb so people who cannot attend the auction can still bid.

Fox in a Rabbit Hole, 2010

Some more mixed media work from me..Coming from a fashion background I am loving the incorporation of textiles in my work. I find the I am enjoying laborious hand stitching, knotting, cutting and gluing. Quite interesting as I used to loathe sewing, especially hand stitching and now I can sit embroidering for hours. Hmmm, I think I am showing my age.

By the way, I am currently working on a couple of super awesome projects! Firstly I am pimping a uke for Melbourne's annual Ukulele Festival and the other is a art show and benefit for the flooding disasters in Australia.

Busy times, but will certainly keep you posted!

Why hello! It has been a long long while. Too long. Weeks go by and by and before you know it they turn into months. I have been a busy little bee, exhibiting, selling more art at markets, working on some 3D painting and organisng an art fundraiser. Wow! Lots of things. But I am back & look forward to sharing what I have been up to with you.

So, above is lovely Claire, she was collaged, stitched and painted onto calico. She is teribbly morose and fights despair on a daily basis. Her cats are called Inky & Winky. They climb all over her meow a lot while she drinks copious amounts of tea and paints the landscape she peers at from her dark and musty room.

I almost forgot about my family of Lima beans from Northcote! Northcote is a wonderful suburb in Northern Melbourne and consists of many creative types, hipsters and notably young organic families that wear crocs and severely rimmed glasses. I notice I had not showcased this on my blog so here it is. This is part of my Melbourne Fruits series.
The Peanuts at Disneyland were just a product of amusing thought I had one day. A family vacation, which is supposed to be relaxing and fun can often (and mostly) end up being quite trying and drag on with nagging kids and stressed out adults. I assume it would be much the same for peanut families in peanut land.

Just a couple of quickies from me. No I'm not being dirty. I have multiple projects on the go but at the moment I feel like I'm exploring a lot of ideas rather than just settling into one piece. Ink, water colour, books, fabric, and thread are consuming my brain and hands. I don't think I have consciously created a 'final' piece of work lately, however I'm creating more in a day than I ever have. It has mostly been experimentation with a majority being spontaneously created, lots of little pieces. However I do have some great ideas for a new body of work lurking around the corner... More on that soon.

Lately it's just been so fluid and relaxed. I kind of like that.

Isn't it utterly delicious when you get to create something foul, ugly or just a little off? There is something so satisfying about perfecting a foul creature or ruining the promise of a 'pretty' piece. Don't get me wrong, I like many others delight in creating beautiful things but love the other end of the spectrum, too. It's almost like you are breaking free and rebelling against the rules. The lovely ladies above are a product of my frustration whilst trying to create pretty images. The ugly in me has come out. And I like it.

My ongoing theme of fruits and vegetables is far from finished. My first dabble in water colour for this theme; however this genre is always most certainly quite spontaneous and whimsical for me. It makes a lot of fun as I never quite know what to expect at the end, and I always have a little chuckle as their personality comes to life. I am currently working on more pieces for my Melbourne Fruits project, so stay tuned for more strange fruit.

150 Years of Bathing

It has been a long time coming indeed. I have disappeared for the last few months but am back to showcase a variety of projects that have been keeping me rather busy.

Firstly is this short stop-motion animation created for the Melbourne City Baths to help celebrate their 150th anniversary. 150 years of Bathing is a rather playful animation highlighting the history of bathing in Melbourne, Australia. Alongside amazing entertainment by the Footscray Women's Circus it was shown at the Melbourne city baths during anniversary celebrations.

My first stop motion animation, and I must say although a bit wonky I am rather proud of this effort! It took a lot of sleepless nights, patience and helping hands. Created with simple cardboard cut outs on beautifully photographed backgrounds by Jessie Boylan and directed/produced by the amazingly talented Suzi Taylor of Fingerprint Productions.

Green...A vintage feel.

Grey...Quite Halloween-y

I wanted to catalog the process of making over this leggy ladies piece. I originally did the piece in acrylic on wood but felt it was overly complex in detail. I've redone this piece in Adobe Illustrator and kept it really simple. Then I experimented with colours and layout. I've decided on the pink with the oval border as a final piece, but I also like the others. I think the design becomes more effective, what do you think?
And, yes I will be putting some new stuff up soon. Even though it may seem so, I don't plan on rehashing my old work forever...

An old image I have given a face lift. I really liked the poetry of this image but always found it a tad too dull, so have brightened it up. I think it just has enough punch now.
Also, after a solid break from Illustration which lasted for a few months, I am happy to say that I am finally coming into another wave of creativity and productivity. I have been experimenting with collage and water colour, with a looser aesthetic which I can't wait to share with you all. Stay tuned, as I begin cataloging my recent adventures!

I recently had the pleasure of partaking in some sumptuous sketching activities. Dr Sketchy's provided some great entertainment thanks to Tank the Muppet, a seriously talented performance artist. Her aerial show was spectacular and she had such a sweet aesthetic that was so lovely to draw. The tattoos, big eyelashes and cutesy bows in her pink hair were absolutely adorable! Little Cupid was inspired by my illustration KoKo Rising which won the KoKo Black drawing competition last year. a+b + what? you say? Check the key in the image above. Now this is a tricky one to explain. A t-shirt print I designed for a fabulous up and coming t-shirt label called Plum. They are based in Sydney and have a wonderful philosophy of plus & minus being key in all of their designs. Using this concept they employ independent designers to create positive tag lines and accompanying art. It's great to see designers getting inspired and crafting original ideas.
So above is Plum's Theory of Happiness. Boiled down to a mathematical equation it is partly inspired by Einstein's Theory of Relativity. Who ever thought happiness could be so simple?

Plum launches in February and I will be keep you posted with links etc.

Lots of collage, sticky craft glue and oh-so careful application of it all. The characters come to life as they tumble out of the story book. Wow! I've never quite experienced a drawing class like this! It's been such a long time since I've done any life drawing and I can really notice it, but it was so great to get back into it. The last time I had the pleasure was in 2008 as part of our study curriculum. Unfortunately they discontinued the life drawing component in our second year which is such a shame. I think it's such a valuable skill to upkeep and enhances any visual artist's technique. These images are from the start of the session, warming up & getting a feel for the form & fluidity.

I have a fetish for ultra fine nibs so decided to indulge by working with 0.03 & 0.05 pens. Why on earth would you do that, you may ask? Well I thought it might be fun to test my attention to detail, concentration and above all, my patience. Of course. The things we do for love. Luckily success has prevailed and I'm now curious to experiment with some colour.

Artists have been asked to decorate/paint/mutate trucker caps for the show. It is presented by gallery 696 and part of Semi-Permanent in Melbourne this October. Here is a line drawing of my Vicenary Vixens. I'm really enjoying the idea of experimenting with mirrored images & am fascinated with Siamese twins & the like. I got so excited & spent more time playing with alliteration in the title before the image even came to fruition. Actually, it's more of a paragraph rather than a title...It was pretty long.
